Library/Media Center
Instructor: Mrs. Hopkins
As part of the Lackawanna Trail High School community for the past seventeen years, I have witnessed the rapid progression of technology in the classroom, workplace, and the home. This trend has also found its way into public school libraries. Technology is providing increased options for students to communicate, research, and learn using a variety of library materials, both print and digital. I am excited to help your child begin their exploration of information and to teach our students to use the resources which are literally at their fingertips in the Library Media Center and at home.

This year, we are adding new databases to support social studies, science, health, and English which will be available to your student 24/7 from home. You will see more information links, including the new "Parent Links" section just below this message. There, you will find the beginnings of what will become a treasure trove of information for you and your student including Careers, Technology, Research, Writing, and Math resources. More will be added soon!

Lackawanna Trail High School’s Library Media Center is undergoing changes, but so is the world of information. There is a lot to learn out there, but there is plenty to discover in here, too.

Stop in today or feel free to contact me.

Scholastic Book Fair Donations
Thank you to the generous donations of faculty and staff toward the book fair. The pictures below show just how many books we were able to purchase for the library!
Facts on File Databases
New this year to the library are Facts on File databases and World Book Online. These encyclopedias and databases were chosen by your teachers and librarian to bring current information, videos, and resources to you any time you need them! This means if you are working on that term paper at home, just log into Facts on File or World Book Online for the facts, figures, and details you need--anytime.

Check the Parents and Students Resources section below for information on how you log into the new databases, click the links below to access these tools using the username and password that was supplied to you during library orientation. Happy researching!
Still have questions? Check out this PowerPoint to help you through the process!
Book Borrowing Policy
The high school library reflects the building population with print materials that are available for students in grades seven through twelve. Books are evaluated for appropriateness using Booklist Online, a service of the American Library Association. Books are given an age range when they are reviewed. That being said, a book that is listed for students in grades 10-12 will not be available for students in lower grades without prior parent approval.

While libraries seek equal access to information for all, it is my belief that the best judge of what information a child consumes rests with the parent or guardian. If you have any questions on this policy, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Library Policies - READ, RETURN, REPEAT
Please follow the library rules so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy this community space.
  • READ a book. RETURN the book. REPEAT (with a new book!)
  • Every student MUST have a pass to use the library.
  • Students must sign in and sign out.
  • No food or drink is permitted in the library, per school policy.
  • Books may be checked out for a period of 2 weeks, and renewed 1 time.
  • Students who check out books are responsible for loss or damage. (Don't check out a book for someone else under your name.)
  • Fines are charged for overdue books at the rate of 10 cents per day. Lost books are charged Amazon replacement value for a NEW copy of the same book.
  • The use of the computers in the library is a privilege. Do not play games, shop, chat, tweet, or otherwise abuse this privilege.
  • Be aware and abide by the Acceptable Use Policy for the computer network.
  • Reasonable printing and copying is available, up to 5 pages per student.
  • Copy and paste website text into a Word Doc for printing.
  • Save your files to a flash drive. Invest in a small (4-8 GB) drive for your school work.
Sounds like a lot to remember? Don't worry. Be respectful to each other, the books and materials, and the computers, and we will all have a great year.
